The
following recipes for potpourri blends was sent to me, I hope you enjoy
them and the aromatherapy benefits - not to mention how welcoming your
home will become to your friends and family. The recipes contain
instructions and amounts for different types of blossoms, etc. used. For
example, there are different amounts used depending on whether you're
using whole leaves, powders, pods, etc. Stock up on some neat containers,
antique or glass jars, little pails, lace pillows, etc. - potpourri gifts
are great to give to someone special as a gift.
Measure
out all dry ingredients and blend by hand in large non-metallic bowl or
paper grocery bag. With a pipette, gradually add fragrance oil to
potpourri. We suggest about 1/4 to 1/2 fl oz per 16 cups potpourri
(approx. 1 gallon), depending on strength of oil. You can scent such
fixatives as orris root, calamus root and cellulose fiber seperately and
blend with dry ingredients later. Dyed potpourri items should be blended
after potpourri is scented to prevent color from bleeding. Fixatives such
as oak moss, orris root, calamus root, cellulose, citrus peels and spices
help absorb,preserve and release the fragrance of your blend. After
blending and scenting potpourri, fill wide-mouth jars or non-metallic
containers 3/4 full, cover tightly and store in cool dark place. Check
fragrance after several days and add more scent if desired. Cure for 2 to
6 weeks.
Don't
be too concerned with the fancy names of essential oil blends, different
companies give different appealing names to their scents, so get as close
as you can to the name of the flower/herbal ingredient and go from
there. And don't forget to experiment with different scents and
oils. You can find hundreds of places on the web for aromatherapy
supplies, dried blossoms and herbs, as well as jars, oils and scented wax
chips to add to your simmering potpourri blends. And don't forget that you
can add these oils and blossoms to your handmade soaps - visit the recipes
for soaps before you leave.
Remember
you can create scented wreaths and scented herbal pillows for sweet
dreams, I recommend lavender for the sleep pillows. You can add just about
any herb to these blends for aromatherapy benefits. Visit our
